( Excerpt from minutes of the company)
" Upon invitation, a group met the 18th day of December,
1885, at the Elk Horn Free School. It was proposed and decided to organize a
Mutual Fire Association for Shelby and Audubon Counties, Iowa. Also proposed
were Laws and By-Laws which were adopted after some changes."
On March 1, 1886, the Danish Mutual Fire Insurance Association was organized
and chartered. The company’s philosophy was embodied in a quote by one of the
organizers, Hans Petersen; " The insured must have all he is entitled to,
but no one must have more."
Today, Danish Mutual Insurance Association serves the farm and town insurance
needs in Audubon, Carroll, Cass, Crawford, Harrison, Pottawattamie and Shelby
counties in Iowa. Our staff of five employees and fifteen independent agencies
